Surgical Technologists

Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of surgeons or other surgical personnel to help ensure safe and effective surgeries. They are members of operating teams which include surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses. A typical day for a Surgical Tech might entail setting up an operating room, checking and preparing equipment, passing instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures and counting sponges. Surgical Techs also assist in the preparation and care of specimens taken for lab tests. Transporting patients and preparing them for operations also fall under the Surgical Tech's duties. This might include washing and disinfecting incision sites. Before and after surgeries, Surgical Techs take an inventory of supplies and equipment and restock as necessary.

A Surgical Tech is also skillful in hazardous disposal techniques and life support procedures and are experts in clinical sterilizing techniques. Conscientious, orderly, and in tune with the demands and protocol of the operating room, Surgical Techs always have the patient's safety in mind.

Surgical Techs can advance in their field by specializing in a particular kind of surgery such as plastic, heart or orthopedic surgery. Some advance to first assistant for the surgeon.
